Come celebrate Juneteenth in Montevallo at George Dailey Park!

The City of Montevallo’s Parks & Recreation Board will host their 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration from 10 AM – 1 PM at George Dailey Park (245 Selma Road) on Thursday, June 19.

This free-admission event will feature a program, live musical and dance performances, children’s activities, community organizations, and the unveiling of the Selma Road Black Business District historical marker on the Montevallo African American Heritage Trail

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in June 2021. It is a national celebration of freedom: the anniversary of June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Texas learned they had been set free for two years.

The event will kick off at 10:00 AM with the unveiling of the historical marker. Mr. C.P. and Mrs. Lillie Pierson will be the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies of the Program. Other program participants will include Reverend Alfonzo Colvin, Minister Vivian Bolden, Mayor Rusty Nix, Ms. Maxine Morgan, City Council District 2 Representative Lelia Horton Mitchell, Clifford DuBose of the Parks and Recreation Board, and Pastor Elijah Smith. Performances from the University of Montevallo Gospel Chorus and Hope Dance and Arts will bring music and dance to the celebration. Local businesses Good Shepherd Funeral Home and It’s About Time Barber Shop will also be recognized.

Other community partners who will be on site include Montevallo Main Street, Impact Montevallo, Montevallo Junior City Council, Montevallo Legacy Project, Shelby County NAACP, Parnell Memorial Library, Survivor's Rock, Inc., the Town of Wilton, and Gamma Phi Delta Sorority Inc. Alpha Pi Chapter.

Lunch will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring their own chair(s).

Thanks to our supporters, Mayor Rusty Nix and the Montevallo City Council, Montevallo Chamber of Commerce, Sophie’s Kitchen, N4SEASONS, Encouragement Learning Foundation, Inc., Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church and others.
